以哈佛大学为代表的美国研究型大学的哲学博士(PhD)教育以其高质量著称于世,但哲学博士教育是唯一对学生不进行专业培训的专业教育,且太多的哲学博士生中途辍学。哈佛大学前校长德里克·博克长期关注哲学博士教育,通过梳理其任内校长年度报告、访谈及其新著《大学的未来》,整理和分析了博克关于改革哈佛大学和美国研究型大学哲学博士教育的思路与举措,并据此提出我国研究型大学学术型博士生教育的建议。
Abstract:
The PhD education at American research universities, as represented by Harvard University, is well-known for its high quality around the world. Despite its prestige, the PhD program faces unique challenges: it is the only form of professional education that does not offer specialized training to its students, and it suffers from a high attrition rate among doctoral students. This article investigates the ideas and practices of PhD education reform at Harvard and other American research universities carried out by former Harvard president Derek Bok, as articulated in his annual presidential reports, 2011 interviews, and in his book Higher Education in America. Finally, this article puts forward the implications and suggestions for academic doctoral degree education of Chinese research universities.
