Abstract:
Based on the data of the 2015 China Household Finance Survey (CHFS), this paper explores the “mystery” of the rapid growth of Chinese households’ consumption of extracurricular education from the perspective of marketization. The results show that marketization has a significant positive impact on family extracurricular education consumption, especially in families with only one child, highly-educated parents, and multiple properties. Herd mentality and short-term preference are the two most important influencing mechanisms through which marketization affects household extracurricular education consumption. An increase in fiscal expenditure on education not only fails to reduce household extracurricular education consumption but also leads to its further increase due to the inability to meet families’ demand for high-quality educational resources. The conclusions of this paper reveal the social structural factors influencing family consumption of extracurricular education, as well as a possible mechanism of increasing educational inequality.
