Abstract:
This article explores the cultural and institutional legacy of Republican Christian colleges in contemporary China. While the early PRC regime regarded Christian colleges(especially Yenching University and St.John's University)as symbols of cultural imperialism, the reform period witnessed a wave of scholarly attempts to reassess these missionary colleges as pioneers in Sino-Western cultural exchange.By focusing the recent debates surrounding NYU Shanghai and Peking University's Yenching Academy,we argue that the shadow of“cultural imperialism”continues to complicate efforts to connect current initiatives back to the once reviled Christian colleges.
