近年来,全球高等教育日渐国际化与全球化,英语作为国际交流通用语(English as a Lingua Franca)已然成为高等教育知识传授、科研成果传播等的重要工具。以英语为媒介教授专业课程(English Medium Instruction; 简称EMI)是各非英语国家和地区高等院校走向国际化的必要手段。然而EMI教学并非仅仅将专业课程内容翻译成英文,其成功实施取决于宏观与微观政策、课程设置、师生英语水平等一系列内外因素。本文聚焦清华大学研究生阶段的英语媒介教学,采用调查问卷(教师问卷61份、学生问卷429份)方法收集数据, 探究教师和学生对该校开设的EMI课程的态度、担忧和期望;旨在为我国高校EMI课程建设提出参考性建议,促进我国高等教育国际化。
Abstract:
With increased globalization and internationalization, English as a Lingua Franca has become the most important tool in higher education and research in the last few decades. English Medium Instruction (EMI) has been considered essential in accessing internationalization in non-English speaking countries. Rather than simply translating content into English, EMI involves many macro and micro factors such as educational policy, curriculum design, and the English proficiency of both teachers and students, etc. This study investigates both teachers’ and students’ attitudes, anxieties, and expectations of EMI offered in Tsinghua University through questionnaire surveys administered to 61 teachers and 429 postgraduate students. It is hoped that this study could offer some constructive and practical implications for promoting EMI in China’s higher education.
