Abstract:
Using the data from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) 2014-2015, this paper discusses the impact of online game consumption on the mental health of junior high school students after controlling individual, family, school, peer group, and other factors. The study found that the longer they played games, the worse their mental health would be; there are significant and steady negative effects of online games on students’ mental health; the peer environment of “fighting, hating and abusing each other” in online games has brought psychological pressure on the level of virtual space to young people, and has a negative impact on their mental health; online games do not affect students’ mental health in isolation. The combination of virtual and real situations, such as strong use of online games, high peer quality, attending private schools, poor parent-child relationship, low social and economic status of families, and not living with parents, has a significant negative impact on student’s mental health. Promoting the development of functional games and building a scientific and efficient online game regulatory policy system will be effective ways to ensure the healthy growth of young people in China.
