Today’s China is both a modern country and one rooted in thousands of years of tradition. Traditional ethical justice prevents society from evolving into a mere collection of individuals through the public “good” of ethical entities, yet its lack of a concept of individual rights ultimately leads to a form of justice dominated by the powerful and privileged. In contrast, while modern rights-based justice demonstrates full respect for individual rights, it fails to provide society with substantive value-based beliefs due to the absence of a “we” consciousness. Satisfying the people is the political aspiration of Chinese education, and the people’s character is its political defining feature. The people’s character represents the unity of individuality and wholeness, the unity of universality and commonness, and the unity of normativity and experience. People’s justice is an educational justice theory with Chinese characteristics and style, rooted in traditional Chinese culture, grounded in China’s social reality, and addressing China’s educational issues. It breaks the opposition and oscillation between the two value systems of “modernity” and “tradition”: it not only overcomes the hidden risk of traditional ethical justice becoming dominated by the powerful by endowing people with equal educational rights, but also avoids the atomization risk of modern rights-based justice through the “we” consciousness. Fundamentally, it achieves the internal unity of traditional ethical justice and modern rights-based justice.
